Why do we need a Respite House?

The Iris Respite House is a place to relax, to heal, to grow…a place for both current and past caregivers to engage in an overnight break. This model is similar to a Bed and Breakfast with spa and salon amenities. The facility will accommodate the caregiver by providing a place of rest and restorative care for the mind, body, and spirit.  Whether the caregiver needs rest, rejuvenation, or emotional support, the Iris Respite House will exemplify the Hope Grows model of support.

What Impact Will The Respite House Have?

Reports show that caregiving is in crisis mode. Many of the 44 million family caregivers in our country are facing significant physical, mental, emotional, and financial challenges. Some even face early mortality. The overall impact the Iris Respite House will have on the caregiver is a short break by way of overnight stays, helping to manage stress, improve physical, mental, and emotional health, and in extreme cases, reduce burnout and compassion fatigue.

Why Stay at The Respite House?

The Iris Respite House will offer a healthy, nature-centric environment where caregivers can get an overnight break and opt in for services that help them: manage stress, restore balance, improve physical, mental, and emotional health, and in extreme cases, reduce burnout and compassion fatigue.

Offerings will include spa and salon amenities, caregiver support programs, and opportunities to connect with nature. The Iris Respite House is surrounded by seven healing and restorative gardens with plans to develop the remaining acreage with a labyrinth, pond, chapel area, and a forest garden, to name a few.

Guests can choose to engage actively in daily activities or passively through appreciation of the nature and healing environment surrounding them.

How Can You Support the Iris Respite House?

To help us get the doors open sooner rather than later, Hope Grows is seeking financial support to help us push forward and continue with the renovations that have already begun. Please join Charles and Lisa Story in bringing the Iris Respite House into reality. There a number of sponsorship opportunities available, including The Healing Tree, which will be located within the front entrance.

Our Story and The Healing and Restorative Gardens

In the spring of 2008 the idea of an overnight Bed and Breakfast with healing and restorative gardens, for caregivers, was born. Founder and Executive Director, Lisa Story, turned to nature and the dirt of the earth as a way to move through the grief of losing of her father. Learning horticultural therapy, Lisa began pouring her pain in to the earth, creating healing and restorative gardens. Lisa realized there was a lack of support for caregivers in the Pittsburgh area to take a ‘short break’ away from the stress of caring for someone that truly offered a change of perspective.

Nature therapy is at the core of the Hope Grows mission. We incorporate a proven scientific approach to our programming and the emphasis is on holistic and integrated wellness, using positive and mindful techniques, individualized to each caregiver’s needs. The Healing and Restorative Gardens on the property are designed with restoration and meditation in mind, as well as, a place for a change of environment; a sanctuary of mind, body, and spirit.
